Who I Am

I'm playing along with MamaKat in her weekly Writer's Workshop. She provides the prompts and we provide the writing.

The Prompt:

Write a poem describing who you are and/or who you are not.

When I wake up, I am comatose
I am a hand that slaps off the alarm
I am the foot that nudges my husband to get up
I am the zombie that brushes my teeth
I am running late

When I hit the kitchen, the switch has been flicked
I am a multi-tasker
I am the short-order cook
I am the fastest diaper changer, backpack-packer you've ever seen
I am a well oiled machine

When I get behind the wheel, I am Zen
I am lost in my head, lost in my internal daily planner
I am the voice that repeatedly tells Will to quit playing with the window
I am the voice that sings Sesame Street
I am the eyes in the rear-view mirror admiring my boys

When I get to the school, I am melancholic
I am sad to say goodbye
I am proud of where they are
I am the appearance of a Wonder Woman
I am putting on a good show, thanks to my well-behaved boys

Now I am alone.
Now I don't know who I am.
Without the chores.
Without the boys.
Without the husband.
Without the clock.
Who am I?

I am not afraid.
I am not depressed.
I am not bored.
I am not restless.
I am not searching.
I am not unsatisfied.

I am entering a new chapter
I am figuring it out
I am thankful to have this chance
I am going to take care of myself
I am determined to carve out my spot
I am on the path
I am proud
I am confident

When it's 2pm, I am Mom again
I am my children.

But I never forget that tomorrow at 10, I will work at figuring out who Stacey is, again.

I wonder what that will be like. I'm still with mine nearly 24/7 because they're so young...

I loved that.

Funny how we all seem to switch from comatose to multitasker in the matter of an hour.

Sometimes I like that alone time where I can just wonder about who I really am!

Great words!

I'm excited to learn who I am going to be when my boys are all off at school for a few hours each day. I'm afraid that I'll be a junk-food-eating-Justin-Timberlake-stalking-Internet-freak but I'm hoping that's not the case.

An eloquent portrait of yourself painted with words. It just shows how very dedicated you are to your children.

Thanks so much for poppin' in and jumpin' on. I hope you enjoy the ride down here on the Ozarks Ponderosa.

Visiting from Mama Kats...

This was terrific. I love it. You really knocked this one out of the park. Not only do I love your poem structure, I can so relate to what you said.

Good job on the poem. I am always amazed/surprised how moms give so much of themselves to the rearing of kids.

The time when the kids spread their wings and start to fly, be it school, college, life on their own, whatever seems to be viewed a bit differently by dads and moms. Dads are all about the attempt and the soaring. Moms seem have a great deal of melancholy realizing that their duties are changing once again. That's what makes life interesting.

I love the way that you go through the day and you are who you are when you are with those you love and you are not when you are alone.

Excellent poem. Thank you for sharing,

You nailed motherhood with this one and showed the loveliness of you at the same time. Beautiful!

I feel you right up to the home alone part? I want to be that person too. We can be alone wondering who we are together. Please? Just kidding...I don't know what I'll do with myself once they're all in school. Probably just continue to be the daycare lady. :)

Great poem! I can relate on so many levels - particularly I am comatose, I am zombie, I am running late.
